CarboScreen is a spin-off of RWTH Aachen University that received a startup grant from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action in spring 2023. The company was founded in November 2023 based on our research in the field of carbon fibers and composites at the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University.


Today, our mission is to make carbon fiber and composite manufacturing cheaper and more sustainable through digitalization. With our technologies, manufacturers are for the first time able to monitor and evaluate the properties of their products during the ongoing process.

Interactive Demonstrator

We presented our interactive demonstrator at the JEC World 2024 in Paris to convince visitors of the features of our AI-powered optical sensor system. Even with a simple design and affordable components, the system was able to detect and categorize fiber defects in real time.

How Can Our Sensors Revolutionize Your Production Process?

  • Digital Blind (Level 0: Offline)

    • Starting Point: At this stage, there's no digital monitoring or automation in place. Production processes are handled manually, and there’s no data collected on product quality.
  • Digital See (Level 1: Basic Monitoring)

    • What It Does: Our solution begins by collecting data to continuously monitor product quality. This includes basic processes like product categorization and certification.
    • Benefit: You gain insight into the quality of products in real-time, providing a better understanding of your production outcomes.
  • Digital Act (Level 2: Data with AI Support)

    • What It Does: Data collection is now used to generate warning signals for operators. Operators can respond to these warnings manually. Additionally, there’s an option to link the data to historical system information for more context.
    • Benefit: You get automated alerts that help you react faster to any potential problems.
  • Digital Decide (Level 3: Advanced Analysis with AI)

    • What It Does: We take it further by using automatic analysis to not only generate signals but also provide customized actions for operators.
    • Benefit: The system not only alerts operators but also suggests actions, making the production process more efficient and responsive.
  • Digital Control (Level 4: Autonomous Control)

    • What It Does: At this advanced stage, the system can automatically control parts of the process, such as operating a "smart oven." This level of digitalization enables a smart factory, where processes are autonomously adjusted based on real-time data.
    • Benefit: Your production line can run autonomously, making real-time adjustments for peak efficiency and minimal intervention.
